How was this element discovered, and how was it named?
- Radium was discovered in a very interesting way. This discovery started the beginning of the modern era in science. The Curies found out that after removing uranium from uranium-bearing mineral called pitchblende, removing the uranium still left it radioactive. Eventually, the Curies separated out the radioactive mixture that consisted of barium, another element. This procedure was done by working with a lot of ore. The barium was heated in a flame to product spectral lines, and a red color was produced with other colors involved with barium's spectra. The spectral line was associated with a new element, which was named radium after the Latin word radius, meaning "ray".
